Observation biases, ubiquitous organisms, introduced species, et cetera

The observations and descriptions on this website are biased towards beautiful and exotic species. I claim no moral superiority here, as I am guilty of the same, but lately it has occurred to me that I, and perhaps all of us are inherently biased. In the realm of biology, ecology, etc., we focus on large or pretty organisms. This is a bias to bear in mind. For example, a more or less ubiquitous observation may not even merit a photograph, but the organism may be an important part of an ecosystem and so on. My jokes used to fall flat that museums are extremely biased in favor of multicellular eukaryotes, but I digress.

In short, this remark refers to a normal observation bias that we perhaps should be more aware of. Ubiquitous organisms, invasive species, introduced species, and so on, are a part of out environment. They may change the ecology for better or worse, ameliorating the effects of industrialization, or contributing to localized extinctions, but I think we should observe them.

Suggested Books sorted by the Library of Congress Catalog system

  • The following titles reflect subjects relevant to humankind's relations with nature, technology, and biology. I've included some peripheral subject titles which seem relevant due to the human distribution on Earth and our relationship with technology and the environment. I've de-emphasized computer science, linguistics, and even paleontology, because I dislike depending on computers and because paleontology is an endless abyss for my personality. I included a couple of ecologically relevant titles such as one on bicycles and another on electric vehicles. It appears that titles cannot be underlined, so my apologies if I am incorrect in terms of works cited, etc.

Skip ahead to the QE, QH, QL, and QK indeces for biology only books. I prefer to organize my books by the Library of Congress scheme because it seems more intuitive to me than the Dewey Decimal system. Some titles mentioned have the Dewey Decimal Number subsequent in the string to the Library of Congress Calling Card [alphanumeric] Number. The Library of Congress is the inheriting agency of Thomas Jefferson's collection. It is the largest library in the world and in Universities within the USA, their system is used to classify books. Please search for it online if you are interested and let me know what you think!
