Help with quality control

Can you help check these links below for any documentations that were a first for Illinois on iNaturalist in 2021? You'll often find species on here that are the result of computer vision errors as well as observations that should be marked captive/cultivated. Fixing these helps sort the wheat from the chaff and keeps range maps representative of wild organisms. Many thanks to all who help with quality control!!

Tagging IDers who made 100+ IDs on 2021 Illinois plant observations. Can you help with the identify links above?

So, the concept is that you want the listed species checked for Illinois? And any 2021 unidentified Illinois plants we can?

Posted by sedgequeen over 2 years ago

heck yeah

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

@bouteloua : what is it about?

Posted by t_e_d over 2 years ago

@t_e_d here's a little background on our project: https://illinoisplants.org/illinois-botanists-big-year (it's basically just iNatting - but one way to gather Illinois plant people in a group / friendly competition)

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

@bouteloua : I am not from Illinois, but I can check ID of Convolvulaceae. Just 2021 ? or also before ?

Posted by t_e_d over 2 years ago

@t_e_d yes the deadline in a few days is only for observations in 2021.

Posted by prairie_fairy over 2 years ago

I don’t understand

Posted by maryah over 2 years ago

@maryah this year in Illinois we had an iNaturalist competition to see who could rack up the most observations and the most species within the state. You were tagged because you helped identify several plants in Illinois in 2021 and we are asking for your help confirming more identifications before the project closes in a few days

Posted by prairie_fairy over 2 years ago

generally speaking I would be more than happy, rn I am sitting on 3.7k notifications and whittling those down is gonna take foreverr

Posted by astra_the_dragon over 2 years ago

The only species on the list that I could have an opinion is V. phlomoides (orange mullein). Since it can be confused with V. thapsus (Great Mullein) I don’t think I can prove that it is not present in Illinois.

Posted by elschongar over 2 years ago

I just took a look at Verbascum that did not reach research grade and did not see any flowering V. phlomoides (orange mullein). Checking every research grade V. thapsus is not feasible for me right now.

Posted by elschongar over 2 years ago

thanks for checking @elschongar!

@trh_blue yeah honestly I massively regret using that coarse ID swiper app years ago even though I only made a few hundred or low thousands of IDs with it, way too many notifications 😳

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

well I have all the ones from the IDathon plus a few weeks extra P:

Posted by astra_the_dragon over 2 years ago

I've done what I can with your list of Poales. Do you want me to send you the spreadsheet with my comments? If so, do you have an e-mail or how do I send them? I have added ID's when I can.

Posted by sedgequeen over 2 years ago

nice! awesome to see this focused effort from so many. I appreciate it.

and I don't need a spreadsheet (at least I don't think I do??). do you always use a separate spreadsheet when IDing?

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

@sedgequeen : you can write your comments directly on the observations with your IDs, so that everybody can have them. :-)

Posted by t_e_d over 2 years ago

No, I don't usually record my identifications. I made the spreadsheet to guide my work, and I put comments on it. You don't need it. I put identifications or comments on some of the species and sometimes just left them, because I think they're OK but can't tell. For about half the Poales, I have nothing to say. No knowledge.

Posted by sedgequeen over 2 years ago

I'm checking the newly-found spurges, least I can do. The E. dulcis could be cultivated, and I'm less familiar with E. spathulata, but it all checks out.

Posted by astra_the_dragon over 2 years ago

@sedgequeen - understood! thank you

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

@bouteloua I've IDed a few observations to Research Grade, but they're not appearing on the project's opening page under Recent Observations. Is that because it's now 2022?...or?

Posted by missgreen over 2 years ago

For the "competitive" part of the Illinois Botanists Big Year and to display in this project, the observer needs to have joined the project. But in the wrap-ups I also like to share the overall activity/species found type stats for the entire state regardless of who has chosen to "compete" since that's how we've done it in the past.

Posted by bouteloua over 2 years ago

Hmmm. I was, most recently, going through your ID link for observations from those who had joined the project; those observations that I IDed to Research Grade from that pool, however, are not showing up on Recent Observations list. I may be misunderstanding you...

Posted by missgreen over 2 years ago

Aha. I think that might be because the recent observations section is based on date-observation-created and not date-became-research-grade.
