obscured coordinates

If you are tagged in this, you may not have trusted the FNAI tracked species project. (We’re sorry for any inconvenience and/or if you view this as spam, but it’s not possible for us to find out for sure what your settings are and this is important to our conservation efforts.) The reason that this is an issue is that some observations for taxa having “taxon geoprivacy” have been given a >29 kilometer positional accuracy, even if you have not personally obscured the locations, which makes them much less useful for our purposes. If you would change your setting as detailed below, we will be able to obtain accurate coordinates from your observations, although please note that this will not make them display accurately on the map for anyone except FNAI staff, so no one else will be able to deduce the true coordinates. If you would be willing to help us out with this by checking your setting for this and changing if needed, we would really appreciate it, as this will greatly improve the value of your observations for our conservation work.

From here
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fnai-tracked-species

click on “Your Membership” a little ways down towards the right.

If your private/obscured visibility setting is "No", please change it to other than that, and preferably the top choice of "Yes, no matter who adds the observation to the project."

That should be all that’s needed. Please feel free if you have any questions and thank you very much!

If you want me to enable you to see the locations of observations I have obscured, you will have to do a better job of letting me know how to do that. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to accommodate your request without success. That's all the time I currently have to play this game. I obscure very few observations, so if there is one that is bugging you, perhaps you can contact me directly and ask for coordinates.

Done, thanks!

@simonsr35
The mobile app may not have these options. You’ll need to use the web browser version.
On a desktop go to: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fnai-tracked-species
Mid-page on the right, click the link to “>> Your Membership”
On the right under “Settings”, select “ Yes, no matter who adds the observation to the project.”
That’s it!

I will add that users must join the project before you can trust FNAI with the coordinates. If FNAI has added your observations to their project, you may have received this email. I added myself to the project and saw 2 observations listed. Good to see you are tracking Stelis ater, as I will be looking for this bee in my free time this year.

can someone let me know why i was tagged in this?

Posted by galloots13 about 2 years ago

Sorry, I did not realize that this went out to people who had not joined the project, but only had their observations added to the project.

I don't really understand all the grumpiness in this thread. It's a request for help on a valuable conservation project. If it's not worth your time, just move on. No need to get all in a twist about it :-)

I would very much like to help. I had assumed that a species which FNAI is tracking is automatically sent to your collection site. I checked my observations and noted only 1 eastern diamondback snake. I know I had seen and probably posted more than 1 of that species, so I checked my observations and found that I had to manually click FNAI in the projects box. How do I know what you are tracking? Am I missing something here? Why is Herpes of Florida able to automatically enter my postings and you, also a state agency also, unable to do so. You'd get more data this way.

Posted by mfeaver about 2 years ago

@mfeaver The reason is complex and would take a long time to explain. Rest assured that, if it were reasonable (and, at this point, possible) for FNAI to set it up where observations were automatically aggregated, they would have done it. They may not get every last observation, but they've gotten a lot of great data out of this project and, as more people change their settings, they should get even more.

Also, in response to some of the other comments, I agree with @daniel_e . FNAI is seeking to better understand the distribution of rare species in Florida so that the species they track can be conserved. If it's a pain to deal with, simply don't deal with it. But changing the settings on your desktop should take less than 30 seconds, so it shouldn't be a big deal...

@mfeaver @petekleinhenz We are looking into the feasibility of implementing a collection project. It appears to be possible, but maybe not feasible, and we want to do some testing and check on some details first to be absolutely sure. When this project was created, collection projects were not an option, and it was only relatively recently that iNaturalist started allowing obscured coordinates to be gleaned from observations in a collection project if members trust the project. Thank you again for your help with our conservation efforts and also for your patience.

I was wicked confused by this message (had not joined FNAI). Makes sense now. I've joined the project, granted geo to the project, and added my other relevant observations. Happy to help, and I trust the coordinates will be used ethically and discreetly.

Posted by floridensis about 2 years ago

I was also confused by the original message, but have now joined the FNAI project and added observations to it.

Posted by simonsr35 about 2 years ago

@floridensis @simonsr35 Sorry about the confusion and thank you very much for helping us. We are very careful about who gets to see/use any data that we have, as the last thing we'd ever want to do is have someone use them in a way that would negatively affect rare species.

Posted by davealmquist about 2 years ago

Just saw this. If you could tell me which of my observations you are interested in, I'm happy to help you. I will try to think of projects like yours moving forward but to this point I have not used the obscure location function.

Posted by ray163 about 2 years ago

@ray163 I think that this is the only one that we have in there now.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/27895851
It is not obscured by you, but has "taxon geoprivacy". If you would "trust" the project, we can gain access to the true coordinates, which would help us a lot. We are interested in any observations of species on the project list
https://www.inaturalist.org/lists/629861-FNAI-tracked-speciess-Check-List?rank=species
and there should be a way for you to add all of your suitable observations. Sorry that I didn't see this sooner and thank you very much for being willing to help.

Posted by davealmquist about 2 years ago

@davealmquist , well the reason there is no specific site location for thta one is that I caught it so many years ago all I know is it was at Blackwater River State Park, Florida. Sorry I can't be more specific.
