Get ready!!! City Nature Challenge 2023, April 28 - May 1!

Friday, April 28 - Monday, May 1
Mark the calendars! Get ready to deeply engage with nature on these four days! Let's document EVERYTHING. :)

Each year, the citizen/community scientists in Dallas/Fort Worth remind the world just how much biodiversity exists here amongst us. The City Nature Challenge is an excellent way to highlight not just this biodiversity but also the active group of folks that engage with nature -- I love it!

So, mark it on your calendars -- April 28 - May 1 -- City Nature Challenge 2023!!! Any and all observations made on these four days from the 10 counties that make up DFW (Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise) and uploaded before May 6th will count towards the DFW City Nature Challenge. No extra steps, no projects that you have to join, nothing -- it's automatic!

I'll put up another journal post with some of the gatherings -- if you know of others, please let me know!

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me @sambiology, sam.kieschnick@tpwd.texas.gov, sambiology@gmail.com, or my cell: 214 215 5605

Yeah, boy! @sambiology says iNat isn't a cult, but that's not slowing down my proselytizing!

This is going to be great. Just go a new set of night vision goggles. I am going to go through the old naturalist gear cabinet I have and get my pack ready to rumble. I will have all my other stuff at the ready. I need to scratch that BioBlitz itch. Lets do it again! All Wings Report In!

@sambiology Out of curiosity - who won last year and where did DFW finish? I never saw any results...

I will participate!

Posted by jim668 about 1 year ago

So excited! Gonna go for some records this year!

Posted by katelyn3 about 1 year ago

On my calendar and looking forward to it. I'll lead a couple of events again this year, but maybe not on all four days like I've done in the past. Nah, I know better. I'll be out there!

Posted by naturemom about 1 year ago

Yassss! I'm so ready for this!!! CNC is my favorite holiday weekend! 😂

Posted by wildcarrot about 1 year ago

I'll be out there hunting up some odes- hoping to try some new spots in addition to my usual haunts.

Yes! I am ready! :)

Good grief, I’ll be in High Island that weekend :(

Just FYI -- if you want to practice some more, warm up the camera, or connect with other iNatters, here are a couple events coming up before the city nature challenge as well:

I love the CNC weekend!!!

Posted by sara39 about 1 year ago

Is it midnight, yet!!!???

Good news, I thought we would lose @devinpedraza and @isaaceastland to the Austin area this year, but they promised to return to DFW just for the iNat challenge. @gwaithir will have to be kidnapped from his computer and assignments, but I have a plan. @callmekiwii @jonothon-cantu @nathanielstx @karlamont will be making observations while working as interns with the City of Lewisville native median project. Must be nice to get paid to iNat!
The rest of the UNT SER crew is ready to go! Let's do this! @immortalwhat @brandonmeadows @madisonruther @mirandamix @mckenzie_sprabary @faith_labry @ecologiststeve @jada-martinez @gracemartinyoung @ashgiron @numberoneshrimpfan @eva_dwelle @abb3ykate @sarahparoski @dstrbd_ecologist @gracedeckard @savannahbug @chloejade @abbyh09 @juliet_jackson @audrerees @joel_p_ashman and @kaitlynnnn and @jimenavivanco

Hey all -- just got word -- we'll cancel the Friday night mothing event in Midlothian. Threats of hail make mothing no fun. So, stay safe -- and maybe keep an eye out for some moths outside of your places!

As far as I know, Frisco is still on!

Posted by sambiology about 1 year ago

My contributions will be limited this year--I'll be in Oregon and try to help out the Portland city nature challenge! Good luck, get lots and lots of species documented, go DFW!

Posted by jasmitch about 1 year ago

@caleborear, enjoy High Island--I was there last weekend and the bird diversity was crazy.

Posted by jasmitch about 1 year ago

I have a day and a half to participate, less than last year, but at least I’m not traveling for work like some of the recent challenges.

Posted by observerjosh about 1 year ago

As long as the weather holds, I'm doing a wildflower inaturalist walk at the Burleson campout. Not really an official bioblitz this year but we'll be checking out what's in the pocket prairie. I'll be rambling around west FW otherwise probably!
Happy iNatting this weekend!

Posted by katelyn3 about 1 year ago

Final stretch... we're almost there! Half hour countdown from Central Time Zone.

Here are results from 2022:
Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas, United States:

42,398 observations
3,417 species
1,324 observers

@jim668 Here's the source for last year's observations: https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/past-results

We're almost tied with Houston for number of species.

Posted by scarletskylight about 1 year ago

I was so looking forward to mothing in Midlothian. Now that it's canceled, it probably won't rain!

Posted by lulubelle about 1 year ago

Nooo dang it rain, I was so excited!

Posted by nathanmayflower about 1 year ago

I got some cool birds this morning!

Posted by balajidevarajan about 1 year ago

I revisited all my favorite plants in my local prairie remnant this morning :) :) :) :)

Posted by scarletskylight about 1 year ago

I visited a couple places today.

Posted by bobbie79 about 1 year ago

I'm looking for get-togethers within a stone's throw of west Fort Worth if anyone knows any events that aren't rained out. I'm black-lighting under my covered patio tonight, but that's about it. :(

Posted by ambytbfl about 1 year ago

@ambytbfl, there was nothing planned in Ft Worth tonight.

Posted by lulubelle about 1 year ago

@sambiology We have our Denton County Master Gardener Plant Sale this weekend as well as our NPSOT-Trinity Forks Plant Sale ... whew! But, I'm squeezing in as many observations (and identifications) as I can!

Posted by kathrynwells333 about 1 year ago

Well, my phone died last night and it’s not turning back on, and I have to travel for work tomorrow, so I’m wrapping up my observations a half day sooner than planned. I still have a small number to add from my camera, but not too many more than I already have. It was fun, and observed some lifers!

Good luck everyone else on finishing up!

Posted by observerjosh about 1 year ago

My daughter is old enough now that she wants to come on "the flower hunt" with me. I swear, we've found every straggler daisy bloom in the neighborhood. Also, a lot of rocks...

Posted by fratto about 1 year ago

@fratto , rocks are good!❤️

Posted by lulubelle about 1 year ago

I finished my phone upload which pretty much finishes up my observations. I’ll try to do some identifying later in the week, but not sure I’ll have much time with work.

Posted by observerjosh about 1 year ago

We still have the normal week to upload our photos and ID observations, right? I assumed we did and don't have all my stuff in. Normally the week of upload/ID time is mentioned, but I can't find it mentioned this time. If we don't have that, then I am out of luck on a llotof observations.

Posted by lulubelle about 1 year ago

Whew -- I'm worn out! :) Another GREAT showing for Dallas/Fort Worth!

So, we have until Sunday/Monday to upload everything and ID as much as we can. Monday is when the results are announced. Of course, the quicker that we can get everything uploaded, the better.
I'll be working hard on ID'ing as much as I can the rest of this week! :)

Posted by sambiology about 1 year ago

Definitely one of the most fun weekends I've ever had!!!! Let's go DFW! Hopefully I'll finish uploading everything before tonight!

Posted by nathanmayflower about 1 year ago

Hey all, just FYI -- posted some events/gatherings/blacklighting stuff for DFW this June and July:
